The Jackson Manzie Interview.

Jackson. He's one of my favorite riders, and I havent got to meet him yet but I'm hoping that when hes back in the states that I'll get to ride with him! He's one of the very few true street riders in the land down under and that street style got him a spot on the Proto team not to long ago. So I hit him up and asked him some questions about Proto, riding, and his life I guess.

So your the newest member of the Proto team, hows that feel?

Fucking ganster. Yeah it's good man it's exactly where i want to be so im very happy.

How did you even get on Proto? Kinda random ya know? A street rider from Aus just getting on Proto. I dont think many people saw that coming.

I didn't spend much time with Andrew so im not entirely sure why he asked me, but I think dylan and alex might have helped that one along. I know he liked my video and it all went from there I guess.

Hell yea that must of felt sick to have Andrew ask you, I heard that another U.S company was hitting you up to get on there team? Care to go into that at all?

Lucky was interested. But I made the choice to go with Proto. I won't say anything more than that i dont think it's my business to.

Worddd yea I respect that, Lucky is tight tho, tons of homies on the team. But there is always talk of the next Proto DVD, are you going to film for that after the LUX DVD comes out?

Because i dont own an NTSC camera i cant exactly film for proto over here. So i think the plan is im going to try and film my whole part for Andrew when im over there again in June. Lux will just be whatever i film here.

Ahhh yea good point, You know i got you on a NTSC VX1000 if you need one for a while! haha hows the LUX dvd going though? You been stacking alot of clips for your part?

Not exactly, ive got like maybe 10 clips filmed. We're just going out and filming whatever and then we'll decide later what we want to keep. We're all pretty relaxed about it. And andrew might send me a vx for a while, so i might hit you up on that though. Some of the stuff ive filmed ive never done before so i like what ive filmed so far.

Yea man forsure! Thats cool though that you guys are pretty chill about filming. So you said your coming back to cali this year. How long you staying this time? You know yet?

Hopefully longer maybe 2-3 months. Not entirely sure yet it'll depend on how much dough i can save up, im not doing too well so far haha.

What city would you say was your favorite the last time you were in cali?

San Fransiscooooo. Nice food, nice hills, nice scenery, liberal population, nice spots. Tonnes of little nooks and crannies to explore in that city, it reminded me of sydney a little.

Oh hell yea man that was by far my favorite to. Everything there is so crazy, the hills, people, buildings, everything is just tight. You just got a new dog a few weeks ago, tell us about him! haha

He's a sausage dog and his name is courage.

Andrew also has a sausage dog, did you ever get to meet buddy dog? haha he's a pretty rad little dog (Buddy Dog is blind, deaf, and has the most gnar scar on his back from getting stuck under a fence)

Yeah I never met buddy dog but he's had some crazy adventures by the looks of it. I've had dachsunds in my house my whole life because my mum loves them, they're hilariously awesome dogs

Yea they are pretty awesome. So do you ever hang out with any of the Blunt or Madd dudes since you know... You live in Aus? haha

I ride with jackson bartlett every now and again, and Warick occasionally but other than that no not really. I hang out with my friends and they hang out with theirs. No big deal. I do ride with rory chris and coedie a lot though I love those guys. Can I just say I watch michigan dudes a lot haha. I have it saved on my computer.

hahaha ohhh shit michigan dudes... (a full length BMX video of my friends that I filmed a few years ago) That video was actually tight for how shitty everything was filmed/edited, most of the Michigan BMX scene was in it. Filmed with a 1 chip sony handycam and kenko fisheye. the good old days. thats funny tho dude that you've watched that. Anyways thats sweet that you ride with those guys. Do you get pretty bummed on how pretty must 80% of the Aus scene is park? And thats how the scooter world sees you guys?

Once you've been watching scooter videos for 5 years you realize that the ones you like are the ones with a good vibe, a really good atmosphere where you can tell what the riders are all about. Everyone knows that when you go down to your local, and all your friends are there, that yeah, you have awesome fun and there is a great vibe, but I just don't think that translates to film well. When I see 4 tricks on the same quarter one after another and a few face shots I get zero atmosphere from that and zero interest. Its not about what tricks theyre doing, because everyone knows the stuff guys are doing now is really really hard, and in good friends with a lot of people who only ride park. I want to see kids riding around their city and get a feel for their scene. That's all. I don't think you get that from watching park, or at least I don't. I think that's the least offensive way I can summarize my feelings haha.

Damn dude that was perfect, haha I totally feel you on that one. It's now always about trick after trick after trick. I think all of us want to know tho, how the fuck did you meet Tyler, The Creator?!

I went to the odd future pop up store on its opening day in Sydney and he was there haha. We chatted for a bit because he liked my shirt. I adore OF so it was a surreal moment.

Thats so sweet! So do you live in Sydney?

Yep lived here the majority of my life. Greatest city in the world baby

Is Sydney the biggest city in all of Aus? It just seems like it would be to me, but what do I know. haha

Yeah it is man. But most people don't know it isn't our capital.

Are the street spots pretty good? Looks like from the Friendly videos theres some dank shit around there

Yeah it's definitely not as good as California or San Fran or any of those places, we have spots, but certain types of spots are impossible to find here. Like its quite hard to find a really decent down rail, and hard to find good ledges nowadays. Ive been looking for a bank to over rail for like 2 years too, never found one. Security guards are all over your asses in the city now too. But yes it you take the time to find things, you'll find what you want for sure.

The spots in California are unreal sometimes, it just seems like they were ment to be skated/rode. Do you think that street riding is going to move to more bigger stuff like sets and rails, or do you think that its going to get more tech like tricking in and out of handrails, switch, ect. in the years to come?

Hmmmm. Good question. I guess there's always guys that'll do both. Can't really say I know the answer to that one.

Alright man, well I think that'll about do it! You wanna give any shoutouts?

Yeah shoutout to biggie smalls and Andrew for hooking me up.

haha sounds goood dude, always good talkin to ya!

Boxes Limited: The Interview

Well here it is. Boxes Lmited is one of the best scooter clothing companies out there. I had a chance to meet the man behind it, Kris Anacleto when I was staying at Buff's house in Vista, CA. I had heard about Kris and all I really knew was that he was Andrew's friend who was a filmer and ran Boxes. Then him at Matt Mckeen showed up at Andrew's to hangout. The next day we all went out filming and he's one of the chillest dudes ever. And he knows his shit behind the old VX2100. He ran the Boxes booth at SD6 and I was helping out and he bought me lunch haha. So yea I hit him up a few days ago becuase alot of people know of Boxes Limited, but they dont know much about it. So I thought it would be a good idea to get a interview done with him! And here it is!!!

What made you want to start a scooter clothing company?
I've been best friends with Andrew Broussard (owner of Proto Scooters) for the past 14 years, and we've grown up doing almost everything together. I've always been into skating but Andrew never was, but he got into scootering around our senior year or something like that. He would come out and film with us and what not, and eventually started the Scooter Resource. Once he started Proto, I would always help him out with graphics, video stuff, etc. My work background has always been video, graphic design, and marketing, so one day we were talking and decided to work on a project together and that's how Boxes initially started. With Andrew and I each using our resources, we figured we could come out with something really good that hasn't been done yet in the industry. Andrew actually owns Boxes more than I do, I just have a stake in it and I run the program. I handle all the creative stuff, the video, clothing design, team managing, Internet promotion, etc. From an outsiders view, it's my company, but Andrew has a say in everything, I just handle the stuff I'm good at and Andrew does the same.

How did you choose the name Boxes Limited?
We actually had a different name from the beginning, but that name was actually taken for a plus-size woman's brand of clothing. So I sat there for a while working on a new name and somehow came up with Boxes and really liked the look of it with the design I used for the logo. It's definitely a name that people have to get warmed up to, It's weird at first. But as the brand grows, it will become more normal. Think about names like Volcom, RVCA, Billabong, all those names are kind of like "What's that name for? Sounds kind of dumb?" But now those names are so embedded in people's minds that they are normal. As far as the Limited part goes, we kind of wanted to give the brand a name that made it sound more special because we feel like what we're doing in this industry IS more special. Branching away from the cheesey aspect that so many companies are doing. Boxes truly is a very limited company in the scooter industry.

The Boxes team is pretty stacked, how did you pick who you wanted on the team?
Well we knew we wanted to keep the team small from the get go. It's just easier to start a company that way and keep everything organized. We wanted to put people on who we knew personally as well, not just because of how good they are. It was pretty easy for us to pick the initial team. One thing Andrew and I wanted to make sure and do is keep some what of a separation between Boxes and Proto, so initially we only had Kasson and Kilbury on. But once Chema got up here to Southern California from Guadalajara and started staying with us and filming, it was a no brainer. He's such a work horse, I take him out filming every Saturday and Sunday and he gets on average 4 tricks a day. He's been here for only 4 months and has 6 minutes of raw, usable footage for his Proto part and that's after his Boxes promo already released. Addison is just a bad ass dude who's been around killing it forever and has a good vibe when hanging out. McKeen and I have basically the same outlook on what we think will look good on video and it's really fun filming with that dude. Plus, McKeen is obviously a favorite in the industry.

Is there any new product in the works right now?
Definitely. McKeen is getting a signature 3/4 baseball sleeve shirt coming out this Friday when his promo drops. Working on a signature piece with Dylan, zip up hoodies, beanies, hats, it's all coming out. We're doing everything step by step, and as the business grows, more and more will be offered. Button ups, pants, all of that is the goal. There's no need for scooter riders to be wearing skate clothing if they have a brand that can represent them and have all the clothing they need.

You film and edit all of the Boxes Promo's, but you're a skateboard filmer. Do you think there are any differences when your filming scooter riding?

Of course there are some differences, but as whole, not really. The most exciting part about filming with scooter riders is being able to take them to spots that just don't work for skaters. Everyone on Boxes comes here to Vista where I live and they're pretty baffled at the millions of spots I have just within the 20 mile radius of my house. But yah, not much of a difference to me when filming skateboarding and scootering. They're both awesome and creative, so at that point there's no reason to really compare the two. I know there are skaters out there who hate on scootering, and scooter riders who hate on skating, but there's really no need for that. Every one's just doing their own thing and that's awesome. I'm 26 years old, I got rid of that "skateboarding is the only cool thing" mentality a long long time ago. I've come out with 3 full length skate videos, and Andrew has had clips in all of them. We always have big premieres for our videos and everyone is always stoked when Andrew's clips come on.

Are there any future plans for a full length DVD?

Definitely, but nothing set in stone yet. McKeen is finishing his Addict part, Dylan and Chema are working on their Proto parts, but they both have so much footage they could probably start working on their next parts. Addison is in the bay area working full time and finishing his stuff for the Overshow video, and Kilbury is in LA working on rocket science stuff. I'm not kidding about rocket science either, the dude is on top of his life program and doing big things with it. So every one is working on stuff, but we want to take some summer filming trips and try to work on a more full length project for sure. Imagine that line up in a full video, people are gonna be stoked.

Chema is the newest member of the team, how did he get on?
What's funny about Chema just getting on recently is he was the very first person Andrew wanted on but I had to say no for a few reasons. I wanted to make sure Boxes came out as company that had a new set of standards across the board. Riding, filming, presentation, graphics, all of that. With Chema being in Mexico, it was going to be impossible to film with him and implement those quality of standards, especially when it comes to video quality. I want everything filmed well and on point to really express what this brand is about. But once Chema got his Visa and is now allowed in the states, it was a no brainer to put him on. I can't wait until his Proto part comes out, I just filmed what will probably be his ender yesterday and it's easily the gnarliest thing I've ever filmed between scootering and skating.

Do you have any goals in 2012 for Boxes?

Tons. We have a new rider who will be announced in a month or so, once I fly out and film the rest of his promo with him. We want to come out with a lot more product, some of which you'll be seeing quite soon. We want to just keep pumping out our Internet content, the Q&A's, throw away edits, ads, etc. We'd like to start advertising in magazines, opening up new accounts and getting in more shops, expanding our international sales. Just trying to stay on top of our game and hopefully we'll get some more stuff out there to get people stoked.

Any thanks or shoutouts?

Mainly to Andrew, for being the main dude who really kick started this industry into something legitimate and not just a kid sport. And to the Boxes riders who have been fully supportive and lending a hand in getting this thing going. When it comes down to it, it's not mine and Andrew's company, it's everyone on the teams company too. They have a say in what gets made and who gets on, so they have control as well. We have an eclectic team and everyone has different view points and opinions on this industry, and it's becoming very interesting to run a company right now.

Wee Scooters is back?

So Madis Kukk is a really cool dude from overseas. He started a company wayyy back called WEE scooters and they made some really good and strong bars. Its been dead for a while but hes bringing it back!!! This is what he had to say on the WEE website...

"Yes. They will be back. The OG bars with the goofiest name ever. WEE.
After putting emphasis on the local scootershop called REBEL since August 2009, we haven't had much time to generate more handlebars as other scooterdaddy companies were popping up with cheaper scooters and its parts, thus making it more available for younger riders at low cost, the scene has become way less mature over the past few years. It has become a trend rather than a culture.

With all the scooterdads and moms running the business side, the quality, strength and customizability of the products has become a secondary priority next to quantity of sales to most companies, but for us at WEE Scooters, a rider's needs come first: we started out as a group providing American and Canadian scooter parts for riders across the world due to the lack of local scootershops in non-US countries, but most importantly -- we specialized in making our own in-house custom made handlebars any size a rider wished for with more than 180 colors to choose for powdercoat so that every rider could design a handlebar for personal use according to one's preferences and requirements which have developed over the years after picking up a scooter.
No company has yet to reach that level still years later.

We will pick up where we left from: making custom-made handlebars again. From riders to riders. Say "NO" to trend-setters. Because we will say "no" to trend-whores that don't know what size bars they want, 'cause obviously they would be riding for the wrong reasons, it's just a waste of our time & effort. Even though the raw material costs way more these days with increasing service fees with all other shit etc, we will still be making some fresh bars again no matter what the cost is, 'cause not a single fuck is given. Just hardcore bars for hardcore riders.

So stay tuned for more news of our refreshing journey to our roots.

- MK."
